Chest of treasure the folks Below donated to the nuns

Each year, the Wintercandlemakers select a charity to support during WFOL through Ebay auctions and donations. We believe that we can have fun and do good at the same time. That’s why it’s a tradition in our fandom for our conventions to select charities and hold auctions to benefit them, and why WFOL does the same – we carry the light, each in our own way, and try to make the world a little better for others. This year, the WFOL charity is:

Water.org

Did you know that every 20 seconds, a child dies from a water-related illness? That more people have cell phones than have a toilet? That nearly 1 billion people live without easy access to clean water?

For more than two decades, Water.org has been at the forefront of developing and delivering solutions to the world’s water access crisis. The organization pioneers innovative, community-driven solutions to help people gain and retain access to safe water and sanitation. To date, Water.org has positively transformed the lives of more than a million people in Africa, South Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Its approach ranges from building and rehabilitating wells and toilets to providing micro-financing to allow communities and individual families to develop clean water connections.

Every $1 invested in water and sanitation generates about $8 return in the form of increased productivity and/or reduced healthcare costs for the average family. It’s difficult to overstate the advantages of having access to safe water and sanitation – everything from attacking the root cause of water-related illness (the number one killer of children under five) to reduction of physical injuries to women from lifting and carrying heavy loads of water. Even school attendance greatly increases when families have access to safe water, as children do not suffer from preventable illnesses. Safe water is at the core of a thriving community in so many ways.

Contributions will be accepted throughout Winterfest Online. It’s easy to contribute! You can, of course, send funds directly to Water.org. If that’s how you feel most comfortable contributing, we urge you to do so. But we’d really like to send one cashier’s check in the name of the Beauty and the Beast fans who contributed during Winterfest, along with a letter explaining our efforts. If that appeals to you, please contribute by submitting funds through Paypal or writing a check.

Here’s how to do it – it’s easy!

Just click on the Donate button below. JoAnn Baca is collecting our contributions, so hers is the email address you'll see. Enter the amount you wish to contribute and click the Update Total button, then follow the directions on the screen. You can pay with a debit or credit card, a bank account, or paypal balance. You can even use Paypal from outside the US to send a contribution in a variety of currencies, and it will be converted into US dollars.

If you prefer to send a check, you can send it to JoAnn at:

JoAnn Baca
5560 Redland Drive
San Diego, CA 92115

You may make a check out to Water.org and JoAnn will include it along with the consolidated Paypal contributions.

A reminder: we have some wonderful items up for auction on Ebay! Please check them out. The seller is “santiago23” and every penny raised in the auctions will be added to the cashier’s check that will go to Water.org. So bid on some terrific B&B swag, knowing that your funds will go to our selected charity!

There you have it – a worthy charity, easy ways to contribute, and a chance to feel good about doing good as we all join in to raise funds for our WFOL charity! Let’s make a difference in the lives of others, one even more profound than the difference “Beauty and the Beast” has made in our lives. It’s the Tunnelish thing to do!
